Kirkwood Society
The Kirkwood Society recognizes those actively involved with, and committed to, the progress of human services provided by the American Red Cross in the Greater Kansas City area. Members of the Kirkwood Society are distinguished friends of the chapter who contribute major support to guarantee that its leadership in human services will continue for the benefit of generations to come.
Since its inception in 1881, philanthropy has played a significant role at the Red Cross. Over the years, major contributions from loyal supporters have provided the resources to help build the Red Cross into the respected human service organization it is today. Out of this charitable tradition, The Kirkwood Society was created in January 1994, to help ensure the philanthropic future of the local Red Cross in honor of Laura Nelson Kirkwood. Laura was the daughter of civic leader William Rockhill Nelson and the first Chairperson of the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Red Cross (1914 – 1917).
By sharing their financial resources and publicly expressing their support, members of The Kirkwood Society help address compelling human service priorities that might otherwise go unmet. Within this framework of support, the administration and Board of Directors of the Greater Kansas City Chapter may plan for the present as well as the future.
