Disaster Response Information

After tornadoes ripped through Missouri’s Clay and Jackson counties May 2, touching down in Gladstone, Kansas City and Independence, the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Red Cross mobilized 53 volunteers to provide immediate relief to those affected by the devastating storm.

During the four-day relief effort, the Greater Kansas City Chapter responded by offering residents of the affected areas food, beverages, shelter, trash bags, tarps and cleaning supplies. In addition, the disaster action team surveyed the damaged areas to help the Chapter better assist those families affected by the storms.

Mobile feeding units were dispatched to locations in both counties to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the Chapter served about 1,020 meals to affected clients and emergency service workers. Red Cross volunteers continued their efforts until Sunday afternoon.

The Chapter opened a shelter about 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 3, at the Antioch Bible Baptist Church in Gladstone, Mo., but the site is now closed.

Members of the Red Cross disaster action team continue to evaluate damage assessment data they collected on the scene Friday, but as of Monday morning, the team found 420 housing units with damage from Thursday night’s storm system.

Two-year old Tejia Williams slept through the tornado that struck her home early Friday morning, Red Twenty-two units have been destroyed in Gladstone, Mo., around 77th and Euclid. Team members found 11 units with major damage, 65 units with minor damage and 30 units affected by Thursday night’s storms.

In the vicinity of N.E. 109th and N. Donnelly Ave., Kansas City, Mo., three homes were completely destroyed, 16 units suffered major damage, 15 units sustained minor damage and 82 homes were affected.

In the Jackson County area, Red Cross teams found no homes destroyed, 15 homes with major damage, 46 units with minor damage and 115 units affected.

The Red Cross social service department will continue to offer client assistance by reassessing clients’ shelter and financial needs, and case workers headed to the disaster sites Monday to follow up with families whose homes have been destroyed or suffered major damage.
