Type O Blood Desperately Needed

O negative, the universal blood type, and B negative both in short supply
(Kansas City, MO)—The American Red Cross would like to encourage all eligible blood donors to come out and donate. Types O and B negative blood are critically low as of Monday morning. Both supplies sit at less than a one day supply – O negative sits at .82 days supply, B negative is at .94.

Type O facts:
  • More than half the blood needed nationwide every day is type O.
  • About six percent of the population has O negative blood. Any patient can receive this blood type, making it crucial in emergency situations when there is not enough time to determine a patient’s blood type.
  • O negative patients can receive only O negative blood.
