Red Cross Responds to Bates County Flooding

Volunteers deliver relief, Fourth of July treats to affected community
(Kansas City, Mo.)—As a result of heavy rains over several days, flooding occurred in several communities in Bates County, Mo. Today, the Kansas City Red Cross and Salvation Army opened a shelter at the Butler High School (420 S. Fulton St., Butler, MO) to accommodate the residents of Pappinsville, Mo. who were victims of a levee break on July 2. The shelter is being operated by the Salvation Army with bedding supplies from the American Red Cross.

Trained Red Cross volunteers are conducting a preliminary disaster assessment in Bates County today to assess the amount of damage. Additionally, the Red Cross will open a service center at the high school on July 4 that will remain open through July 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteer caseworkers will be on-site to provide emergency financial assistance and referrals to flood victims.

While many Pappinsville residents will be out of their homes for July fourth, they will not be without a celebration. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow, volunteers from the Kansas City Red Cross will set up a canteen in the high school parking lot to serve area residents traditional Fourth of July fare – hot dogs and chips – to celebrate the holiday.

All American Red Cross disaster assistance is provided free of charge, thanks to donations of time and money from the American people. To support the Red Cross flood relief, donors can make secure online contributions, or by check payable to the American Red Cross, 211 W. Armour Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64111.
