Red Cross assists families after deadly apartment fire

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – Greater Kansas City Red Cross volunteers are assisting several families who lived in an apartment complex that caught fire Friday morning.

It happened at 10307 E. 24 Highway in Independence, Mo. Authorities have confirmed that one person died.

The Red Cross made contact with six of the 10 families affected, providing assistance such as temporary housing, food and clothing. They are working to contact the other four families who were not home at the time of the blaze.

Although we do not yet know the cause of the fire, the Red Cross wants to remind all metro residents to be vigilant about fire safety. Smoke alarms should be checked monthly, space heaters should be used with care and every family should have a fire escape plan.
