Red Cross holds massive free smoke alarm community canvass in area hard hit by home fires

Cause for Alarm program to canvass 1,200 homes Saturday, March 8
WHO: American Red Cross volunteers, including the 100 Black Men of Kansas City, and our partner the Kansas City Fire Department.

WHAT: Volunteers will go door-to-door handing out free smoke alarms, batteries and fire-safety information in the Red Cross’ largest-ever Cause For Alarm event. Our goal is 1,200 homes, the average goal is about 200 homes.

WHEN: Saturday, March 8, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: Volunteers will assemble at 9 a.m. at the American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City, 211 W. Armour Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64111. From 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. they will canvass homes between Benton and Cleveland from 31st to 23rd St.

WHY: In the past three months alone, eight people have died in home fires, and in the past eight months, four people have died in the area the Red Cross will be canvassing. While the circumstances of each fire may differ, experts agree that people with working smoke alarms are more likely to get out safely.

This Cause for Alarm event is being held in conjunction with Daylight Saving Time to remind everyone that when you change your clocks, you should also change your smoke-alarm batteries! Special voice smoke alarms will be available for homes with children.

Event coordinator Becky Nafzinger can be reached on Saturday at 816-223-4971.

This event is sponsored by State Farm Insurance Company, State Street, KCP&L, Massman Foundation, Junior League of Kansas City, Mo., and Lockton Companies, LLC.
