Red Cross Continues its Relief Effort

(Kansas City, Mo.) -The American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City continues to provide assistance to those families affected by last night's severe weather. The Greater Kansas City Chapter dispatched volunteers and staff to the site to assess the storm damage and provide food, water, and clothing to people in need.

Red Cross personnel estimate that in Gladstone around 77th and Euclid, 22 homes have been destroyed, eight have minor damage and 14 have been affected, and the Red Cross provided food and clothing to 20 families in the area.

In the vicinity of N.E. 109th and N. Donnelly Ave., members of the Red Cross disaster action team estimated more than 200 homes sustained damage from the severe weather and plan to finalize their estimate within the next hour.

In the City of Independence, one home suffered major damage, nine received minor damage and 14 homes were affected, but no families required assistance.

The Red Cross, in conjunction with Home Depot, plans to start bulk-item distribution of tarps and cleaning supplies about 4 p.m., and the Outback Steakhouses on Chouteau Trafficway and Valley View Parkway plan to donate meals to the relief effort at the sites in Gladstone, Mo. and Kansas City, Mo. about 4 p.m.

A Red Cross shelter was opened at 10:30 a.m. in Gladstone, Mo. at the Antioch Bible Baptist Church, 800 N.E. 72nd St. At the shelter, residents will be provided with a safe place to stay, as well as meals, snacks, and water. Currently, five families with 15 people have registered at the site, and more are expected to arrive later, including an out-of-town Baptist Chainsaw Crew. The shelter will remain open at least through tonight, and will remain open as the need continues. Additional assistance will be provided as needed.
