Between the two of them, American Red Cross volunteers Mary Thurston and Sherri Odell left 14 children behind to help prepare the Gulf Coast states for the onset of Hurricane Gustav.

Although it’s a sacrifice, it’s a small price to pay to help the thousands who will be in need, Odell said.

Seasoned volunteers, the two women drove one of the Greater Kansas City Chapter’s emergency response vehicles to Baton Rouge, La., and they plan to help the Red Cross with its mobile feeding and distribution services.

Even though Gustav will be Odell’s first tropical storm experience, Thurston volunteered during the Katrina disaster and is familiar with a hurricane’s devastation.

A specialized communications vehicle also left the Chapter on Thursday morning, and its two drivers, Stephen Bonine and Kevin Carr, plan to set up an initial command center in Montgomery, Ala.

An additional four volunteers plan to leave at 6 a.m. Friday from the Kansas City International Airport, and they anticipate working in Red Cross shelters.

The volunteers are scheduled to be in the Gulf Coast for at least two weeks.
