Six more volunteers head to Louisiana
After temporarily shutting down its deployment efforts to prepare for up to 1,000 Louisiana evacuees, the American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City plans to send six more volunteers to Louisiana to help with hurricane relief.
Since last week, the Red Cross has been preparing for Hurricane Gustav by setting up
shelters
and mobilizing feeding vehicles, and 16 volunteers have left Kansas City to help in the Gulf States. In the next few days, the organization plans to extend its relief effort by sending case workers into the affected area to begin disaster assessments.
The volunteers will leave from Kansas International Airport at 7:10 a.m. Wednesday on Delta Airlines Flight 1577.
This brings the total of metro Red Cross volunteers deployed to 22.
