The Greater Kansas City Chapter prepares for possible Gulf Coast evacuees
Hurricane Gustav continues to threaten the Gulf Coast states, and the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Red Cross has joined in the largest relief effort since Hurricane Katrina three years ago.

The Kansas City Chapter is preparing to receive up to 1,000 evacuees from the Gulf Coast, and the Chapter in St. Joseph, Mo., is preparing to receive up to 200. Currently, staff and volunteers are conducting shelter surveys, organizing feeding opportunities and contacting possible volunteers.

Six more volunteers plan to leave the Kansas City area for Texas on Sunday morning. Ten volunteers have already been deployed from the metro area.

Nationally, the American Red Cross has moved volunteers, mobile feeding trucks, cots, blankets and ready-to-eat meals into four of the Gulf states: Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. The organization has moved two-thirds of its vehicles to the Gulf coast and enough shelter supplies to serve half a million residents for six days.
