The American Red Cross

The American Red Cross has introduced Be Red Cross Ready; a package of actions to better assist the public with preparing for emergencies and disasters. The American Red Cross is working with the Department of Homeland Security to offer a single, consistent, primary message for use by all emergency responding agencies.

It is important that we are all prepared for possible disasters and other emergencies. Natural or human-caused disasters can strike suddenly, at anytime and anywhere.

These are three actions everyone can take that will help make a difference:

Get A KitGet a Kit
During a disaster, people will need to have supplies on hand to help them cope and respond. The objective of Get a Kit is to get people to gather the necessary supplies they will need if their daily routine is disrupted. The supplies include things that people need every day – not just during a disaster – such as food, water, clothes, medicines and medical items.

Make a PlanMake a Plan
People should determine before a disaster what their actions will be should a disaster occur. Thinking ahead makes it easier to make decisions in a stressful time and know what to do if separated from others in the household. The objective of Make a Plan is to get people to think through their options and actions before a disaster occurs, write these plans down and share them with others they care about. Make a Plan can be broadened to encourage neighbors to share their plans.

Be InformedBe Informed
The objective of Be Informed is to get people to learn about disasters and to be better informed about how they should prepare and what they can expect from local emergency services and resources during a disaster.

The American Red Cross continues to encourage every person to prepare for emergencies and make their communities safer, healthier and more resilient in the face of adversity.
