Red Cross Chapter to open shelters in metro
The Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Red Cross is preparing to receive up to 1,000 evacuees from Louisiana by opening two large shelters in the metro area Sunday, and the Chapter plans to start setting up the sites about noon.
Although the State of Louisiana hasn’t decided if its evacuees will touch down in the Kansas City area, the Greater Kansas City Chapter plans to open shelters at Kemper Arena, 1800 Genessee, and North Kansas City Community Center, 1999 Iron St. Currently, Red Cross workers are conducting shelter inspections, organizing staffing and feeding opportunities and continuing to contact volunteers.
Nationally, the American Red Cross has moved volunteers, mobile feeding trucks, cots, blankets and ready-to-eat meals into four of the Gulf states: Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. The organization has moved two-thirds of its vehicles to the Gulf coast and enough shelter supplies to serve half a million residents for six days
