Red Cross holds “Adam’s Army” blood drive in memory of special teen
Adam’s family works to make sure blood is there for others who need it

On June 1, 2008, the American Red Cross will hold the third annual “Adam’s Army” blood drive at Timothy Lutheran Church, 425 West R.D. Mize Rd, in Blue Springs, Mo., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The blood drive is in memory of Adam Reed, a 15-year-old boy who died in 2005 of leukemia, a cancer that affects the blood. Adam’s family has organized the blood drive through the Red Cross to remember him and make sure that blood is available for people who need it today, just as it was for Adam when he needed transfusions as he went through treatment.

“Adam received lots of blood – between 100 and 200 units during his treatment,” said Adam’s mother Mary Reed. “Until then, no other close family member had ever had the need for a blood transfusion.”

The goal for the Sunday blood drive is 50 units. The public is encouraged to come out and donate. The need is constant!

Adam was the oldest of five children born to Jeff and Mary Reed. He was an active member of Timothy Lutheran Church where he attended Sunday school and midweek classes and worked as a sound technician.

At 12-years-old, Adam was diagnosed with leukemia and soon after received his first blood platelet transfusion. For more than two years, he underwent two bone marrow transplants and was treated with chemotherapy and radiation. Adam received platelets and whole blood regularly throughout his fight with leukemia, at one point needing 15 units in a 24-hour period.

To schedule an appointment, call 1-800-GIVE LIFE, or visit www.americanredcrossblood.org. Those who cannot attend the drive may contact the Red Cross to find another drive and donate in Adam’s honor.
