Red Cross Announces Emergency Blood Appeal
The American Red Cross has depleted its blood supply and is launching an emergency blood appeal for all types of blood.
Inclement weather throughout the region during the past several weeks prompted the cancellation of many blood drives. Within the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region, the Red Cross needs to make up more than 800 units of blood in the next four days just to maintain its normal supply for patients in area hospitals it serves.
On Friday morning, the Red Cross had just over a half-day supply of O-negative blood and B-negative on its Regional shelves. By Friday, 30 units of O negative blood were already on backorder. Looking at shipments over the next few days the forecast for blood looks even worse.
