Initial volunteers return home from Central U.S.

A large number of American Red Cross volunteers have returned home from the flood-ravaged regions and with them come first-hand stories of mud-caked devastation and uncompromising compassion.

Even though the Greater Kansas City Chapter continues to send out volunteers, stories from the front lines of the relief effort have trickled in, as the initial volunteers slowly return home.

During her two-and-a-half week deployment to Waverly, Iowa, Holden, Mo. resident Donna Terry saw a level of compassion unmatched in any of her previous deployments.

“I have never seen people come out the way they did,” Terry said. “It was amazing.”

Cars filled with hungry evacuees would follow the Red Cross mobile-feeding units, and people chased them on foot, running after vehicles as if they were children chasing ice cream trucks, she said.

In the beginning of the flood, people needed food badly, Terry said.

Along with food, the Red Cross continues to provide shelter and financial support to the victims of the Central U.S. tornadoes and flooding.
