Red Cross Presence Expanded in Regional Communities
New resources expedite responding to local disasters

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City is reinforcing its commitment to serve the residents of Henry, Johnson, Lafayette and Pettis counties and the surrounding communities.

Four new Red Cross cot trailers are being located in the communities of Clinton, Odessa, Sedalia, and Warrensburg. A cot trailer contains the supplies needed for the Red Cross to open a shelter when disaster strikes. Each trailer holds 50 cots, blankets, equipment for dispensing hot and cold food and beverages, and a supply of ready-to-eat meals.

“Previously these supplies would have been brought in from Kansas City or other locations,” said Ken Cope, emergency services director of the Greater Kansas City Chapter. “This enhancement ensures a much more rapid response by the Red Cross to serve the citizens in these counties.”

Cot trailer presentation events:
• Clinton: Tuesday, July 29, at 11 a.m. to the Senior Center at E. Sedalia Ave.
• Warrensburg: Tuesday, July 29, at 1:30 p.m. to the American Red Cross Chapter at 208 Emerson.
• Odessa: Wednesday, July 30, at 10:30 a.m. to the Odessa Fire Department at 301 W. Dryden.
• Sedalia: To be announced.

With the disaster relief supplies in place, the Red Cross now needs members of the community to become Red Cross volunteers. They would be trained in responding to disasters including setting up a shelter when the time comes.

Informational meetings are in the works for each county.
• Warrensburg: Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 6 p.m. in the Red Cross Chapter, 208 Emerson.
• Odessa: Thursday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Odessa Fire Department, 301 W. Dryden.
• Clinton: To be announced.
• Sedalia: To be announced.

The purchase of the trailers and supplies was made possible by grants from the Regional Homeland Security Oversight Committee for Region A.
