Red Cross responds to three early-morning fires
Volunteers work tirelessly to help their fellow citizens
Three fires between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. create a busy morning for volunteers of the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Red Cross Wednesday.
Disaster Action Team members responded to the first fire just after 1 a.m. at 7527 Olive in Kansas City. They provided assistance to a family of five.
About 4 a.m., volunteers rushed to Parkville, Mo., where they were on the scene of a fatal fire at 6701 NW Monticello Terrace. The Red Cross is aiding the family members who survived. Volunteers also provided food and water to the firefighters as they battled the blaze.
Shortly before 7 a.m., volunteers again answered the emergency call and assisted one adult whose home burned at 4031 Park in Kansas City.
“Volunteers are the heart of the Red Cross and DAT members are a special brand of volunteer,” said Emergency Services Director Ken Cope. “Their rapid response to this rash of fires in such a short time shows exactly why they are so special.”
Although we do not yet know the cause of these fires, the Red Cross wants to remind all metro residents to be vigilant about fire safety. Smoke alarms should be checked monthly, space heaters should be used with care, and every family should have a fire escape plan.
