The victims of hurricanes Gustav and Ike still need help

Although much of the media attention for this year’s hurricanes has passed, every day thousands of people displaced by the storms are still waking up in Red Cross shelters. Even more are relying on the Red Cross for daily meals and financial help getting started on the road to rebuilding their lives.

The Red Cross depends on people like you to keep those shelters open, those meals served and the financial assistance available. That is because all Red Cross services are provided free of charge, as an outright gift from the Americans people.

What You Can Do Locally To Help:

Ask loved ones in affected area to register on Safe and Well

The Red Cross reminds anyone with family in the hurricane-affected areas to make sure that family is registered on the national Safe and Well Web site at www.redcross.org. The site allows those directly affected by a disaster to post messages to let their loved ones know of their well-being.

Concerned family members who know the person’s phone number (home, cell or work) or a complete home address can search for the messages posted by those who self-register

For those without internet access, call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) to register yourself and your family. Follow the prompts for disaster information.

As a result of this increadible need, the Red Cross is launching a national fundraising campaign to raise an initial $100 million to fill its depleted Disaster Relief Fund. The Disaster Relief Fund enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims of disaster.

The national Red Cross headquarters assigned a fundraising target of more than $2.6 million to Red Cross chapters in Missouri, and to help reach that goal, the Greater Kansas City Chapter hopes to raise $1 million before Dec. 31, 2008.

Volunteer

The Red Cross is in the middle of a huge disaster relief effort from hurricanes Gustav and Ike that is expected to continue for some time. Nationally, there are 5,400 volunteers on the Gulf Coast, more in other disaster areas across the country, and we don’t know when another disaster will strike.

To do our part, the Greater Kansas City Chapter will recruit 50 new national disaster volunteers who are committed to being Red Cross trained and ready to be deployed for Hurricane Ike or future disasters.
