Red Cross responds to tornado disaster in Kansas
The American Red Cross is working to provide relief and comfort for the many people affected in the regions where tornadoes caused destruction last night.
In Kansas, volunteers and staff are providing emergency shelter and assistance to those affected in Riley, Pottawatomie and Jackson counties. Teams of Red Cross volunteers are in those communities talking to residents to determine their immediate needs, providing food and water and assess the extent of the damage to homes.
Shelters have been opened in Pottorf Hall at 1720 Avery Ave., in Manhattan, Kan., and the community center in Soldier, Kan., on Highway 62.
Families in the affected areas are urged to register themselves with the Red Cross Safe and Well system. They can do so online by going to
www.redcross.org
and clicking on the Safe and Well link, or calling (800) RED-CROSS. Likewise, people looking for family members from the affected area can visit the site or call the number for help.
The Greater Kansas City Chapter is on standby to assist with the disaster relief effort in any way. Kansas City already has volunteers and resources deployed to several sites in Iowa and Nebraska.
