New York Times Political Columnist Shares Views With Kansas Citians One Week Before Election
David Brooks to speak at annual American Red Cross fundraiser

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Oct. 21, 2008) - In light of today’s financial crisis and the upcoming presidential election, David Brooks has a lot to say. The New York Times op-ed columnist will share his opinions at this year’s ninth annual American Red Cross Genevieve Byrne Speaker Series. The fundraiser, 8 p.m., Oct. 28 at the Folly Theater, will provide Kansas Citians with the opportunity to share Brook’s company on the Tuesday before Election Day.

An author and New York Times op-ed columnist since 2003, Brooks has built a reputation of addressing issues with humor and insight. Brooks’ writing showcases a savvy analysis of present-day politics and foreign affairs as well as a keen view of the American way of life. Brooks is a regular analyst on NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, NPR’s All Things Considered and the Diane Rehm Show. He is also the author of Bobos in Paradise: The New Upper Class and How They Got There and On Paradise Drive: How We Live Now (And Always Have) in the Future Tense.

“The Genevieve Byrne Speaker Series allows the Red Cross to continue providing important services to Kansas Citians,” said Courtney Johanning, event coordinator for the Kansas City Chapter. “Our local Red Cross is on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week providing humanitarian services to literally thousands of people every year - right here in our community.”

Proceeds from the Genevieve Byrne Speaker Series will enable the American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City to respond to local emergencies, assist military families and provide people with training to save lives. Fundraisers like the Speaker Series play a vital role to help the Red Cross fulfill its mission of providing relief to victims of disasters.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with a benefactor reception and Brooks will speak at 8 p.m. This year, Nancy and John Dillingham are the honorary chairs and Jill Deramus Dean and Jean Deramus Wagner are the event chairs. The Harry Portman Charitable Trust, UMB Bank n.a., Corporate Trustee sponsors the ninth Genevieve Byrne Speaker Series.
