Local Red Cross chapters send volunteers to aid in disaster relief in Nebraska and Iowa
Volunteers answer the call to help their neighbors in need across the country
Even though the metro area has escaped the worse of the current onslaught of severe weather, local Red Cross disaster volunteers are hard at work. Three volunteers from the Kansas City Chapter headed to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on June 2 to perform feeding and sheltering duties in that flood-ravaged area.
On June 5, three volunteers from the Kansas City Chapter and one from the Wyandotte County Chapter drove mobile feeding vehicles from each chapter to Omaha, Neb. The volunteers were responding to severe weather from the week before. Those crews have been asked to stay longer after the area was hit by another round of severe weather and flooding over the weekend.
A Red Cross volunteer drove the highly-specialized Emergency Communications Response Vehicle from Kansas City to Omaha on June 4 to support communications and logistics for disaster volunteers.
Both chapters have volunteers trained and ready to respond to disasters across the country, but more are always needed. People who wish to become Red Cross
volunteers
and be trained to respond to future local and national disasters are asked to call (816) 931-8400.
