American Red Cross receives $10,000 donation from Aquila Electricity provider contributes to help Mo. ice storm relief effort The energy company Aquila announced Tuesday that it will donate $10,000 to the American Red Cross to support the ice-storm relief effort in northwest Mo. The ice storm hit northwest Mo. Tuesday, Dec. 11, knocking out electric power to tens of thousands of residents and prompting the Red Cross to open or provide support for dozens of shelters. Aquila reports that at the peak of the storm 92-percent of its customers in northwest Missouri were out of power. “The Red Cross has been there since that first day providing vital food, shelter and support to our customers as we have worked to restore their power,” said Ivan Vancas, vice president of Missouri Electric Operations for Aquila. “After seeing the scope of the relief effort the Red Cross is engaged in, we felt compelled to provide support. We greatly appreciate the Red Cross for all that they have done and hope this donation will bolster their efforts in the northwest Missouri area.” The Red Cross said in the last week it has deployed 112 volunteers and six emergency response vehicles to the 13-county area the ice storm hit and has served over 19,000 meals and snacks. “It is during a disaster that the Red Cross needs donations the most as all of our disaster services are free to those affected,” said Kevin Kirby, executive director of the Midland Empire Chapter. “Aquila’s donation helps to insure that we can continue to provide those services.” Back to News American Red Cross Greater Kansas City Chapter 211 W.
