Community Disaster Education/Mitigation Program
Community Disaster Education is available to the community in the form of brochures, presentations and outreach. Trained Red Cross volunteers present a variety of safety presentations and distribute materials designed to raise awareness and educate the community.
An important part of educating the community about disaster preparedness is mitigation. The term mitigation refers to the actions and measures that prevent the occurrence of a disaster or reduce the severity of its effects. Education is a key component.
Programs are offered:
- Proactively by targeting groups at greater risk than the general public (determination is based on disaster history, geography and demography.)
- Reactively when requested by businesses, schools, churches, community groups, etc.
The Communities Most Frequent Disaster — Residential Fires
Red Cross volunteers respond to approximately 450 residence fires per year. We know the difference a smoke alarm can make. As a result, the chapter offers a free smoke alarm program, funded by a generous donation from State Farm Insurance, to help reduce injury, death and property loss caused by fire. In addition, in case of a fatality fire, volunteers canvas the affected neighborhood to provide life saving educational materials on fire safety.
The program targets homeowners within the chapter's jurisdiction who have hardships affording or installing the alarms. An additional aspect of the program is the Cause for Alarm event held in the spring and fall in accordance with daylight savings. Cause for Alarm specifically targets neighborhoods with the highest recent incidences of fire.
We can provide you with the information, but that is only the start. It is up to YOU to take action…
