Preparedness

The Greater Kansas City Chapter of the Red Cross' ability to respond to disasters is completely dependent on the work it does everyday in the area of preparedness. Preparedness, one of the core areas of the Red Cross Disaster Services Program, is the continuing process of identifying, obtaining, developing , managing and sustaining human and material resources and collaborative relationships needed to respond effectively and efficiently to disasters.

The thoughtful execution of preparedness activities ensures that resource needs for any type or size of disaster -- regardless of where or when it strikes in our community -- can be met quickly and effectively by the Red Cross. These activities ensure that the Red Cross can help the people of our community prepare for and reduce the effects of disasters. Additionally, people can participate in meeting their own basic needs in the immediate aftermath of disaster.

In order to fulfill this responsibility, the volunteers and employees of the chapter work daily to assess needs and build readiness. We recruit and train people, gather and maintain materials, develop and expand relationships with public and private agencies and participate in community exercises to meet the ever changing challenges to the safety and security of our community.
