RecoveryThe final stages of Red Cross Disaster Response is helping to make sure that the individuals and families affected begin their recovery process. Red Cross caseworkers, mental health professionals and spiritual care volunteers are there to help ensure that this occurs.
Following disasters, large or small, families meet with caseworkers who help each client by issuing financial assistance based on their disaster-caused needs. While initial disaster response volunteers in the Disaster Action Team or Disaster Services Human Resource system provide immediate relief with food, shelter and clothing; caseworkers provide long-term care. Our caseworkers analyze each situation individually, review damage reports and provide assistance based on each client’s needs. Common long- term needs of families include; bedding needs, rent assistance and replacement of work-related supplies, such as tools, uniforms or other appropriate work and/or school clothing.
By providing this type of Red Cross assistance, we help families to begin taking steps toward their own recovery. Due to the nature of disasters, the sudden impact and the potential loss of life, there may be a need for mental health or spiritual care assistance.
