ResponsePart of the Greater Kansas City American Red Cross mission is to provide disaster relief services to the metropolitan Kansas City area. Through a network of volunteers, paid staff and community resources, our disaster relief program provides assistance to victims of single family fires, local or statewide disasters affecting hundreds of people, as well as national disasters that affect the lives and economy of an entire region. This relief includes Mass Care (feeding and sheltering), Family Services (casework, food, shelter, and clothing), Disaster Health Services (assistance with replacing medicines, eyeglasses, etc.), Disaster Mental Health Services and Disaster Welfare Inquiry.
Whether the disaster is large or small, immediate care comes first, with assistance of food, shelter, clothing and medical needs. Once immediate needs are met, extended care continues, which may include assistance with rent (including deposits), referrals (social service), replacement of critical furniture, minor home repairs, and replacement of professional tools and uniforms.
Although fires occur daily, we also respond to other natural and technological disasters which occur less frequently. Examples of these types of disasters include floods, winter storms, tornadoes/microbursts, commercial transportation incidents, etc. These types of disasters can occur here in Kansas City or nationwide. In either case, we are ready to respond.
