Play It SafeHaving a safe pool begins with a few common sense guidelines, like making sure everyone in the family knows how to swim. We know that sounds obvious, but you'd be amazed how often a household with a backyard pool also has a family member who doesn't know how to swim. There's no such thing as being too young to take swimming lessons ... if a child is old enough to walk, they're old enough to learn how to swim.
Another seemingly obvious safety tip: Don't let anyone - especially children - swim unsupervised. Again, you'd be amazed how often this happens. Someone can drown in a matter of seconds in mere inches of water. We're not trying to be alarmist, but we want to emphasize the importance of supervision. We simply can't stress this enough.
Owning a backyard pool is a big responsibility, and as the pool owner, you should take a water safety course to learn more about pool safety and how to prevent swimming pool accidents.
These pages are dedicated to the memory of John Colloton.
