Youth Programs

Youth ProgramsSafety Brigade features a variety of classes and service projects designed especially for students who are 3 to 17 years of age. The classes are interactive and teach young people the fundamentals of safety in a fun and informative way. Both classes and service opportunities are ideal ways for individuals, scout or church groups, classrooms and entire schools to learn and help others through the American Red Cross.

With a group of six or more students, a trained Red Cross instructor will come to your group to present these programs. We can come to a school, church, community center, your home or anywhere you would like to hold the class. If you don't have a suitable location, you may use one of ours! And we're flexible. Public classes are also available in various locations in the Kansas City area. Call for times and locations of these public classes.

To schedule a class for your youth group, or for more information, call 816-841-5293.

Home Alone
Home Alone prepares children for a fun time at home while adults may need to be away for short periods. This class is also designed for children too young to stay by themselves but could find themselves "alone" if the adult they are with becomes ill or injured. Even very young children need to know what to do in an emergency. Topics discussed include safe ways to handle a house key, what to do if someone comes to the door, how to access 9-1-1 and how to answer the phone.

First Aid For Little People
"Harv" and "Marv" are two cartoon kids who guide participants through scenarios teaching them how to deal with common injuries and illnesses. Topics discussed include identifying an emergency, cuts, burns and fractures, as well as how to get help and what to do until help arrives.

Internet Safety
Children get a lot of benefit from being online, but they can also be targets of crime, exploitation, and harassment. Trusting, curious, and anxious to explore this new world and the relationships it brings, children need parental supervision and common-sense advice on how to be sure that their experiences in "cyberspace" are happy, healthy, and productive. Ages 8-12; 30-45 minutes / Ages 13-17; 30-45 minutes.

Be a Gun Proof Kid
This class helps students consider all of the dangerous consequences of playing with guns. Students will learn what to do if they find a gun or see another child handling one. They will also be encouraged to become peer educators on gun safety.Ages 8-12; 1 hour / Ages 11-15; 1 hour.

Whale Tales
American Red Cross Longfellow's WHALE Tales provides easy-to-follow information to help children learn safe behavior in, on and around the water. Taught in a classroom session, WHALE Tales makes water safety fun and easy to learn. Each lesson is reinforced with color posters, worksheets, activities and a video that features Longfellow, the animated whale.

Germ Busting
Germ Busting is a 30-minute presentation teaching children proper hand-washing. Regular hand-washing is the best way to avoid spreading germs. This presentation includes the use of “Glow Germ”, a lotion that when under black light, shows if hands have been adequately washed. The presentation is a great activity for classrooms, camps or daycare classes.

Basic Aid Training
Basic Aid Training (BAT) prepares children for emergencies including burns, cuts, fractures, breathing emergencies, choking, bicycle and car safety, and precautions around strangers including good touch/bad touch. Students receive a manual and those who successfully complete the class receive a certificate.

This course is presented in a discussion style and includes demonstrations with manikins. Students do not become certified in CPR or first aid.

Webelo Readyman Badge
This class is designed specifically for Webelo Scouts who wish to earn their Readyman Badge. The course takes three hours to complete, usually in two 1 1/2 hour sessions. The class contains practice in CPR and first aid including rescue breathing, choking, and how to treat burns, bleeding and fractures. This course provides great information for Girl Scouts too!

Red Cross Babysitting
Babysitting is often a first job for young people. It is a job that can be fun, but must be taken seriously and responsibly. This interactive class is designed to train young people how to deal with various situations they may encounter while caring for a child. Topics discussed include: emergencies and First Aid; holding, feeding, diapering and entertaining children; as well as how to find babysitting jobs and how to interact with parents. In order to be certified, participants must be 11 years old before the class ends. Students receive a manual and those who successfully complete the class receive a certificate.

The program describes what to do when disaster strikes- such as storms, tornados, floods and terrorist attacks; how to evacuate a home or other locations the children frequent; how to shelter-in-place; and how to understand basic care steps for an injured person.
