Certification and RecertificationOnce you have completed a Red Cross class, you will receive certification. To receive this certification, you must effectively demonstrate your skills to the instructor and score 80% or better on a written exam. Red Cross CPR certificates are good for one year and other certified classes are good for three years.
Aquatics certification is explained in the Water Safety section.
Certification is not awarded for some classes in this guide where your skills and/or knowledge are not being tested for completion. This includes Home Care: Skills For the Family Caregiver and some youth classes.
Recertification Options
Without repeated use of the skills you learn in a Red Cross class, your ability to respond quickly and efficiently in an emergency situation diminishes. The Red Cross recommends you renew your CPR, First Aid and Lifeguarding certificate(s) by enrolling in a Challenge or taking a full class.
Challenges are for people who feel confident they can renew their certificate(s) without retaking a class. They spend one to four hours taking a written test and demonstrating skills to an instructor without any coaching. For more information, see the Challenge section for your specific area.
