Barbara MullinsBarbara Mullins has been a volunteer with the American Red Cross Greater Kansas City Chapter for more than one year, and volunteered for the Red Cross in St. Louis before moving to Kansas City. Barbara teaches CPR and first aid programs for the local Chapter.
“The thing I love most about the volunteer work that I do is the opportunity I have to meet people I otherwise would never have met,” explained Barbara. “The classes are made up of all different walks of life, and people of a variety of ages and professions. It is really fun to meet everyone and to hear their stories. The people realize the importance of the class that they are taking.”
“Barbara is an outstanding volunteer,” noted Laura Jackson, CPR/first aid program manager for the Greater Kansas City Chapter. “She gives nine hours to the American Red Cross to teach CPR and first aid on Saturdays, even though she has a very busy work and home life. The students love Barbara, and so do her co-workers. I feel lucky to have found such a great volunteer.”
Barbara has a strong belief in community and believes her volunteer work with the Red Cross attributes to that. “A lot of times people think volunteering has to be difficult or inconvenient,” Barbara commented. “This made sense to me. I am a trainer for a living and enjoy training others. I believe very strongly in the American Red Cross and the education it provides to the community through its CPR and first aid courses. I wanted to use the skills I have to support that programming. If people look for the things that they know how to do well and like to do – someone out there can benefit from that expertise and passion.”
