Bill CochranFor Raymore resident, Bill Cochran, volunteering for the American Red Cross was a natural fit. As a fire protection specialist/emergency responder instructor for Honeywell FM&T, Bill teaches the company’s firemen and others in the plant a variety of Red Cross courses, including CPR and AED training. Bill is also in charge of Honeywell’s Public Available Defibrillators program, through which he keeps the plants’ nine defibrillators up-to-date.
Bill was first introduced to the American Red Cross as a scout, where his father was a Red Cross instructor. This exposure to Red Cross training followed Bill throughout his career. At Honeywell, one of Bill’s co-workers, Glenn Haager, introduced him to a new opportunity for involvement with the Red Cross – First Aid Stations.
“As a Red Cross instructor, I am able to help people get trained to help others,” said Bill. “And, with the First Aid Stations, I am able to have a hands-on approach and I use my skills to help others.”
The Greater Kansas City Red Cross has been there in the community providing First Aid Stations for community events, festivals, sporting venues, and conventions since the 1970s. Red Cross First Aid Stations are staffed by trained volunteers who are certified in CPR/AED and first aid techniques. These volunteers provide immediate basic first aid for injuries and temporary care for sudden illness, until the individual can be released to family, friends or emergency personnel. An American Red Cross First Aid Station is operated by volunteers and all services are provided free of charge, thanks to generous donors.
Bill has volunteered with the First Aid Stations program since January of 2000, and serves as one of the coordinators for SkillsUSA, a national leadership and skills conference held annually at Bartle Hall in Kansas City. “Bill logged almost 50 hours of volunteering last year alone with our program,”
noted Delane Kempf, first aid station program manager. “As a station leader, he coordinates the other volunteers at the event, in addition to providing immediate first aid care.”
As a volunteer-led organization, the Kansas City Red Cross depends on members of the community, like Bill, to give of their time so that the Red Cross can be there to assist those in our community in need.
