KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City has received $124,596 in donations for the Haitian earthquake relief effort, including the $55,348 raised through the NBC Action News Help for Haiti telethon.

The total does not include funds donated from the metro area through online giving, or the text message donation program. Those donations go through the national Red Cross office and totals are not readily available.

“We are very pleased with the amount of donations flowing into the Chapter for Haiti disaster relief,” said Janet Conley, fund development officer for the Greater Kansas City Chapter. “Considering that more people are donating online — and now through text messaging — the amount of donations coming through the Chapter reflect only a portion of the generosity of Kansas Citians.”

Even a small donation goes a long way in making a difference for the people of Haiti.
  • $5 provides a water container to store clean drinking water
  • A $10 donation provides a family with two water cans to store clean drinking water, basic first aid supplies or a blanket appropriate to the climate.
  • $25 provides a family of five with a kitchen set giving them the ability to cook and serve food (a disaster can destroy even the most basic family possessions and restoring family’s self-sufficiency is essential).
  • $30 provides essential hygiene materials to five people for one month (ensuring adequate hygiene after a disaster is essential in promoting the health of those affected).
  • $60 provides tarps, rope, wood and tools for a family of five to build a temporary shelter.
  • $100 provides a cooking set, hygiene pack, blankets, and water containers for a family of five following a disaster.

Because of the generosity of donors, people in Haiti will receive more than immediate relief — they will receive resources, support and training from the Red Cross that will help them thrive for years to come.
