The Past Month: the Haitian Response
It’s a race against the clock.

The American Red Cross, along with other humanitarian organizations, is rushing to provide Haitians with waterproof shelter before the Caribbean’s hurricane season starts in April.

The Red Cross plans to provide emergency shelter supplies, such as tents, tarps and tools, for about 400,000 people before the rainy season begins, and the organization has already provided these items to 139,000 people. Shelter supplies will be distributed to thousands more in the days ahead.

The Red Cross has also begun to provide transitional shelter supplies with timber to families in Leogane and Port-au-Prince.

Although the sheltering process is taking longer than the Red Cross would like, it is working hard to find temporary solutions to support the Haitian government and address this complex situation. The organization’s shelter experts are working within the Haitian community to identify appropriate transitional shelter options for 150,000 of the most vulnerable people before the hurricane season starts.
